Course Philosophy
- Foundational knowledge of Tobacco Addiction is essential.
- Basic counselling techniques and strategies are the necessary skills.
- Effective therapeutic interventions are the tools.
- The integrated addiction model is the framework for the recovery process.
- Integration of the knowledge, skills, tools and framework for recovery is essential for preparing the student for counselling the smoker.
Course Objectives
- To develop basic foundational knowledge of tobacco in our culture including: historical evolution, addiction theory and dynamics, the counselling process, and recovery planning.
- To develop a practical working knowledge of the core issues involved in recovery from tobacco addiction, and the counselling methods to effectively address them.
- To develop an awareness of special needs and challenges that many smokers encounter, complete with the tools needed to effectively meet them.
- To develop a wellness program for counsellors to prevent burnout and maintain excellent health.
